In the words of Ina Ish, whom we would like to express our sincere gratitude for producing Nick’s pedigree analysis, “Though bred by Barbara Putnam, Caduceus Nicholas carries the prefix most often associated with Dr. Lowell Hughes, also of North Liberty, Iowa."

“He carries a high number of bloodline crosses to Jubilee De Jarnette, which is unusual; a high percentage of Easter Vermont blood, which is rare; and a very strong Sellman breeding heritage. The influence of US Government Farm breeding is much smaller than that of his Sherman blood influence, and, while Woodbury certainly is present in his pedigree, it is not the primary influence, at all. Caduceus Nicholas has sired at least twenty seven foals, most carrying the Battersea prefix. As a sire he has produced in reasonably equal number mares and colts, as a good stallion should.”

We start here, with Ina’s unbiased genetic-based description of Nick, because our opinion of this gentleman is so very biased by the relationship we so quickly established with him. Though we have not yet discovered all of his show ring record (he took two blue ribbons, in the Old Dominion Horse Show, as a 10-year-old), he is a champion with us. When Nick joined our herd in the summer of 2010, he had not been hitched for perhaps 5 or 6 years, but he shouldered the harness as though it was only yesterday. He drives as though he had power steering and loves the task. He sets his head as soon as the bridle is donned even before the reins are hooked-up and he prances as if he is entering the show ring.

This beautiful stallion raises the bar for how a stallion should behave in hand, in harness and with his ladies.
